Social Audits

Many people in poor and working class communities do not know how much money should be spent on service delivery in their area, who should be doing the job and what level of service they can expect. All too often local municipalities keep contract and financial information confidential and do not consult with people on what services they require and how the service is working.

A social audit is a way for people in a community to come together over a week, learn about budgets and contracts and then audit a service by conducting interviews and inspections. At the end, local government representations, contractors and the whole community are invited to hear the findings.
